Movie Review: De Taali

Director of movies like “Shool”, “Love Ke Liya Kuch Bhi Karega”, E Niwaz has again come out of his shell with his latest release movie “De Taali”, director makes a point to bring it to the notice that his latest movie has an original script. Niwas says, “That’s right. Zanjeer inspired Shool, Love Ke Lie Kuch Bhi Kerga was taken from Fargo and my Dum was a remake of Telugu movies. But “De Taali” is original work. I had to gain the confidence to do something that is not inspried from other sources”.“De Taali” is based on a story about three friends the theme of the movie is mainly about friendship, which is directed by E. Niwas. The movie is produced by Ravi Walia and starring by Ayesha Takia with Aftab Shivdasani, Rimi Sen, Saurabh Shukla and Ritesh Deshmukh. The film has been visualized in the locations of Auckland (New Zealand), Mumbai (India) and Bangkok (Thailand). The movie has the melodious songs composed by Vishal Dadlani and Shekhar Ravjiani.
If you have watched the promos of “De Taali”, you would expect a movie with tremendous youth power. You would expect gags, gimmicks, laughter-n-sunshine and lots and lots of fun. But “De Taali” is anything but this! One of the contrary, it is a slow paced love story, which depicts one of the actors as a modern day “Devdas” who hits the bottle when his girlfriend walks out on him. There’s a twist in the story as well, the kidnapping episode, but you do not feel giving a Taali to that too.
Note another aspect. Two songs from the movie have been heavily promoted, the title track (which has lots of energy) and “Maari Teri” (Mallaika Arora Khan plays to the masses completely), which might compel you to buy the ticket. The title song comes when the film concludes (end credits), while the other number is just not there.
Most importantly, “De Taali” gets it wrong on the script level. Loosely inspired by a popular drama (Dawson’s Creek) is okay, but the material lacks the power to keep you hooked. Sure, “De Taali” has a few engaging and enjoyable moments, but it’s akin to an oasis in a desert.
De Taali starts off quite well and the bonding between the three friends is well established in the initial portions. Things perk up the moment Rimi Sen enters the scence and shows her true colours. Everything is fine before her kidnapping, and it is the interval point of movie.
But things only go downhill in the second hour. The entire kidnap drama, the Saurabh Shukla track it cannot get weird than this), the dejected lovers (Mukul Dev, Sanjay Narvekar, Pawan Malhotra) reaching the wedding venue and the family surfacing from oblivion, everything looks ludicrous. By the time you reach the finale, the audience is already bored and has lost all the interest in the enterprise.
E. Niwas odes not get in right this time. He knows the job well, but if you have noticed his last few outings as well as “De Taali”, you would agree that he needs to concertrate on the script than making the frams look alluring. Vishal-Shekhar’s music is a mixed bag. Barring the obove mentioned two numbers, the remaining songs lack fizz.
Aftab, back after a long time, has done a good job. He lends his part the required class, especially his scenes when he falls hopelessly in love with his girlfriends is hilarious. He is one of the few actors who has been able to share comic screen space with Ritesh in the recent past and still hold his own. Ritesh is lovable and his range is finally being tapped by filmmakers. He is great although it does feel that the director has not used him to the best of his abilities in the movie.
Ayesha Takia is getting better and better with every movie. She sadly is overshadowed by the guys in the first half and Rimi Sen in the second. Rimi Sen spices up the otherwise bland scenario with her performance as a gold digger. She does deserve a mention as she has done a great job as a money grabbing girlfriend. A definite step up for her from her recent movies. Anupam Kher is wasted. Ditto for Pawan Malhotra and Mukul Dev.
On the whole, “De Taali” is not a good show, but we can say it as a good comedy movie. It is an apt case of the promos looking great, but the movie is not great like it promos.
